To put it simply, a strategic plan is a roadmap with a predetermined destination. It guides operations and daily business while targeting an achievable end-goal.
In early 2019, Nanaimo’s Mayor and City Council underwent a planning process with an independent consultant to define their vision and values for their term on council. The 2019-2022 Strategic Plan is the result of that process, and outlines the Council’s long-term vision for Nanaimo.
“To be a community that is livable, environmentally sustainable and full of opportunity for all generations and walks of life.”
Stemming out of this vision statement, the document sets out four important strategic themes that represent the values of the Council and the community. These pillars are Environmental Responsibility, Governance Excellence, Livability and Economic Health. Within these priorities are key focus areas to elaborate on the vision, and many action items are listed to see that vision through.
As the council sets its priorities and they move to an operational level, this living document helps focus the City on priority projects that benefit our community. As the action items are completed, the Council will set up new initiatives that support their strategy and continue to drive the City forward into the future.
The first revision to the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan was adopted by the Council at their March 2, 2020 Regular Council Meeting. The revisions stem from the Council’s discussions at a facilitated workshop held on January 27, 2020 and seek to highlight themes and priorities not previously captured in the Strategic Plan.
